Are peptides legal, and what that question actually means

Are peptides legal on the evidence: why the answer depends on approval status, the research-use-only label, and compounding rules, and why legal to sell is not the same as approved to use.

Methodology

How we read the literature

Evidence tier
We grade the literature on four tiers, High (replicated RCTs or meta-analyses), Moderate (multiple trials with mixed findings), Low (a single pilot or case series), and Anecdotal (preclinical only, no human data). The tier appears on every compound profile beside the claim it supports.
Trial stage
Where a compound sits in the human development pipeline is recorded as Preclinical, Phase 1, Phase 2, or Phase 3+. We pull the current stage from ClinicalTrials.gov and the EU Clinical Trials Register on access date and re-verify quarterly.
Regulatory status
We state the FDA posture plainly, approved for indication X, or labeled for research use only, or removed from the 503A list, or investigational under a specific IND. Regulatory status changes; every post carries a review date.
Where we're uncertain
Every compound profile closes with a named uncertainty section, the question we can't answer from the current literature, the trial we'd want to see, the effect size we'd treat as a real signal. Uncertainty is not a failure mode here; it's load-bearing.

Are peptides legal to buy?
Many peptides are sold legally as research chemicals labeled for research use only, which positions them as laboratory reagents rather than medicines. That is different from being approved for human use. A small number of peptides are approved drugs with clear legal status, but most sold online are unapproved for any human indication.
Does research use only mean it is legal to use?
No. The label is a regulatory category, not a permission for human use. Because drugs are regulated by intended use, marketing an unapproved compound with human-use claims can make it an unapproved or misbranded drug regardless of the sticker. The label is better read as a warning than as authorization.
Which peptides are actually approved?
Examples of approved peptide drugs include bremelanotide for a specific sexual-desire indication and tesamorelin for HIV-associated visceral fat accumulation. These have defined legal and clinical status. The majority of peptides marketed online, such as BPC-157 and TB-500, are not approved for human use.
Can a compounding pharmacy legally make any peptide?
No. Compounding is bounded by specific provisions and by FDA lists governing which bulk substances are permitted. Several popular research peptides are not eligible, and the FDA moved to restrict BPC-157 from compounding in 2023. Availability from a source does not establish that a peptide is lawfully compounded.
What would change our reading

A Phase 2 randomized trial with blinded outcome assessment would change the reading. A new independent replication outside the currently dominant research group would change the reading. A regulatory action, approval, restriction, or a class warning, would change the reading. When any of those lands, we update this profile within a week and mark what changed.
